Trees play a critical role in any ecosystem: their leaves provide shade and cooler temperatures in the summer; their roots prevent or decrease erosion; they absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen into the air. After observing many older well- established trees being clear-cut, we facilitated passage of tree protection and anti-clear cutting legislation.

Our goal is to educate the public about the value of older indigenous trees. In addition to providing shade, replacing carbon dioxide with oxygen and minimizing erosion with their root system, they are often resistant to local diseases and thrive in our particular environment.
Throughout 2023 VOBEC worked tirelessly with the Village Trustees to draft Chapter 144 of the Village Code - the Tree and Vegetation Protection Ordinance - which regulates the removal of trees and vegetation in Public Places as well as on Private Property. For a full description of this essential new legislation take a look at the Tree Protection of the Areas of Focus Tab.
This legislation was approved by the Trustees on December 16, 2023 following several public hearings and a working session attended by VOBEC on December 1, 2023.
